An Afternoon Tea Party Inspired By The Crown

Invite your friends over for an authentic afternoon English tea party with these recipes, tips and tricks that will be sure to impress even the Queen herself.

I was recently inspired by the Nextflix show, The Crown. Since I have yet to go to London, I decided to bring London to me by creating an authentic Afternoon English Tea Party in the kitchen.

Before you get started planning the perfect Afternoon English Tea Party, you need to know that Afternoon Tea is not the same as High Tea.

High Tea is a more formal affair situated around the dining room table and is really another word for dinner.

Afternoon Tea is the typical and daily British tea custom. It's an afternoon meal, served anywhere from 4 – 6 pm. Afternoon Tea includes tiers of small crustless sandwiches otherwise known as tea sandwiches, scones, clotted cream, curd, a selection of 2-3 sweet items and of course tea.

The correct order to eating during tea is savory bites first, scones second and sweets last.

For my Afternoon English Tea Party I served the following for each course. You don't have to follow my menu exactly but this is a good representation of what you would see at tea in England. Each course was served with Darjeeling & Wedgewood Afternoon Tea.

1st Course
Tea Sandwiches (Egg Salad & Tuna Salad)
Another common tea sandwich is cucumber and cream cheese

2nd Course
Blueberry Scones
Lemon Curd
Wedgewood Strawberry Preserves
It's also common to serve clotted cream during this course as well

3rd Course
Battenburg Cake
Lemon Shortbread Cookies

The typical Afternoon English Tea Party displays the food on tiered serving platters and trays. Since I didn't have a tiered serving platter, I opted for this beautiful domed platter shown above instead.

If you allow for some creativity with your presentation, you may be pleasantly surprised just how great it actually turns out.

To add a special touch to the ambiance, I placed the lemon curd in a jar with a ribbon, covered the table with a white linen table cloth and pulled out my best silverware.

I also found beautiful teal colored tea cups & saucers plus small plates with gold trim to complete the table.

However you set the table, as long as you have the basic menu covered and tea cups and saucers everyone will be pleased!
